Drongos of Sri Lanka
Drongos are known for their loud, varied and musical vocalisations, including their ability to mimic the sounds of other birds and mammals. This striking quality led the founder of this Library to use the bird for its name and logo.
There are four drongo species resident in Sri Lanka. Two of them, the endemic Crested Drongo, which features in our logo, and the Racket-tailed, are restricted to forest habitats, while the other two, the White-bellied and Black Drongos, occur also around human habitations. The Crested Drongo is a “star performer” in the Sri Lankan rainforest soundscape. One other species is found in Sri Lanka, the Ashy Drongo, a rare winter migrant which seldom vocalizes during its stay in the island.
